AI for parents: homework, schedules, and the family mental load
Mothers carry 71% of the family's mental load. AI can hold a real share of it, without doing the homework or meeting your kid.
It’s 8pm on a Tuesday. The fractions worksheet is due tomorrow, you haven’t added unlike denominators since roughly 2003, and somewhere behind that thought are eleven others: picture day, the permission slip, the gluten-free cake. Every family has a person who holds that list, and research is blunt about who it usually is. A Journal of Marriage and Family study of 3,000 US parents found mothers carry 71% of the household tasks that take mental effort, including 83% of the scheduling.
This post is about using AI to shrink that list, and about the two places where the obvious way to use it is wrong. Used as an answer machine, AI does your kid’s homework and measurably harms their learning; used as a tutor, it measurably helps. Used carelessly, it collects your child’s name, school, and health details into a cloud account; used with three simple swaps, it never needs any of that. The rest is the good news: the drafting, planning, and remembering that eat a parent’s evenings are exactly what these tools do best.
The family runs on one parent’s memory
The load nobody sees is not the driving or the cooking. It is the noticing and remembering: that the cleats are outgrown, that the camp form needs a doctor’s signature, that Thursday is picture day. A University of Bath study published in October 2025 counted it: mothers hold an average of 13.7 household to-dos in their heads against fathers’ 8.2, and the gap barely moves when the mother out-earns everyone in the house. The researchers gave the pattern a name, cognitive stickiness: physical chores get redistributed, but the remembering stays stuck to one person.
The number that makes it concrete: 13.7 open items is roughly a browser with fourteen tabs that never close, running on hardware that also has a job, a relationship, and a body that would like to sleep. The cost is not just the tasks. It is that holding the list crowds out everything you would rather think about, and dropping any one item has a name and a face attached: the kid standing at pickup while everyone else’s ride arrives.
Honesty first: the real fix for an unfair split is a fairer split, and no chatbot renegotiates that for you. What AI can do is shrink the pile itself, because most of the mental load is secretarial. It is drafting, listing, scheduling, translating, and remembering, and a modern assistant does all five well. The shift that matters is treating AI not as a search engine you visit but as a second memory you brief: paste in the chaos, get back the plan.
Homework help works when AI explains, not solves
The fear that AI will do kids’ homework for them is not hypothetical, and the best evidence comes from a randomized trial published in PNAS in June 2025. Nearly 1,000 high schoolers in Turkey did math practice three ways: no AI, a plain chatbot, or a version prompted to tutor with hints instead of answers. With the plain chatbot in hand, kids scored 48% better on practice. Then the AI went away for the exam, and the same kids scored 17% worse than classmates who never had it. They had practiced asking, not solving.
The tutor group is the part parents should memorize. Same model, same kids, one change: it gave hints, never answers. Practice scores more than doubled, and the exam harm disappeared. Mode is everything. The same conclusion showed up at the other end of the education system, where a Harvard physics course built a tutor-mode AI on the same principles and found students learned about twice as much per session as in an active-learning lecture, in less time.
“You are a patient tutor for my 9-year-old. We are working on the problem I paste next. Never give the answer or do a step for her. Ask her one question at a time to help her find the next step herself. If she is stuck twice in a row, give one small hint and ask again. Use short sentences and the same method her worksheet uses. When she gets it right, ask her to explain why it worked.”
Practically: sit with your kid the first few times, and let the AI ask the questions you don’t know how to ask. You stay the warm body and the enforcer of “no, it won’t just tell you.” You also get to retire the phrase “that’s not how we did it when I was in school”: ask the AI to explain the worksheet’s method, to you, first. The logistics load is the easy win
No study needed here, just Tuesday. The teacher email you have rewritten four times because tired sounds like angry: give AI the facts and the tone you want, and the draft arrives in twenty seconds, ready for you to re-add the names and hit send. The permission slip photographed and pasted in: “what do I need to sign, pay, and pack, and by when?” The carpool renegotiation message that has to be firm but neighborly. Each one is five minutes you were going to spend anyway, handed off.
The bigger wins are the multi-step projects. A birthday party is a real project plan: guest list, allergy-aware menu, activity schedule, invitation wording, a shopping list sorted by store. One good prompt produces the whole skeleton, and you spend your effort on the parts that are actually yours, like knowing which two kids can’t sit together. Camp packing lists work the same way: paste the camp’s letter and get a checklist grouped by bag, with the label-everything items flagged. AI is also the family’s translator. The school newsletter is 900 words; somewhere in it are the two dates and one form that concern you. Paste it and ask for exactly that: what applies to a third-grader, what needs action, what can be ignored. Same trick for the sports league’s scheduling email, the summer-camp FAQ, and the six-paragraph message from the class parent about the gift pool. Reading everything was never the job. Knowing what matters was, and that part now takes a minute.
The habit that ties it together is a Sunday weekly reset. Paste the week, in whatever mess it lives in: screenshots of the school newsletter, the practice schedule, the text about the dentist. Ask for conflicts, night-before prep, and a one-minute rundown per day. Ten minutes on Sunday reliably buys back the 9:41pm scramble on Wednesday, and unlike the fridge door, it answers questions.
For judgment calls, it’s a sounding board, not an authority
Screen-time rules, allowance, whether the group chat app every sixth grader suddenly needs is fine: these are not logistics, and AI should not decide them. What it offers is a structured think. Ask it to interview you about your family before it says anything, then to lay out the main approaches with honest tradeoffs. It will surface considerations you hadn’t framed, like separating school-night rules from weekend rules, or writing the exceptions down in advance so they don’t become nightly negotiations.
Allowance works the same way. Instead of asking “how much should a 10-year-old get,” describe your goal: we want him to feel the difference between saving and spending before the amounts matter. The useful reply is not a number, it is the three or four systems families actually use, from flat weekly pay to chores-as-earnings to the three-jars split, each with its known failure mode. Same for “is this app okay”: have the AI list what the app collects, how its chat features work, and what questions to ask your kid about it, then go look at the app yourself.
Hold on to what the answer actually is: a competent average of the internet’s parenting advice. That average is genuinely useful for seeing the option space and terrible as a verdict, because it has never met your kid. You have. Anything touching health, development, or serious behavior questions goes to your pediatrician, not a chatbot. Use the machine to prepare better questions for the humans who know your child.
Keep your kid’s name out of the chat
Here is where this post gets firm. Your kids are already in this world: Pew’s December 2025 survey found 64% of US teens use AI chatbots and about three in ten use one daily. Common Sense Media found seven in ten young people have used generative AI, most without their parents knowing. Regulators are moving too: in September 2025 the FTC opened an inquiry into seven companies, including OpenAI, Meta, and Alphabet, over what their companion-style chatbots do with and to minors.
You can’t control all of that. You can control what flows through your own account, and the rule is simple: the help never needs your child’s identity. Cloud chats are stored, sometimes reviewed, and often used for training unless you opt out. So describe, don’t identify.
Three more house rules. Chatbot accounts have age floors, typically 13 with parental consent, so a young child’s AI use happens on your account, next to you. Companion-style AI friend apps are a separate category from homework tools, and the FTC inquiry above is a good reason to treat them with real caution for kids. And if you want the strongest version of the privacy rule, run the model on your own computer, where the chat never leaves the house; the everyday case for offline AI is half family logistics anyway. Then flip the opt-out-of-training setting in whatever cloud assistant you keep using, because most of them bury one.
The prompt kit
Seven prompts that cover most weeks. Adapt ages and details, keep the two rules that run through all of them: the tutor never hands over answers, and the chat never learns your kid’s name.

“Draft a short, warm email to my child's teacher. Facts: [what happened, what you're asking for]. Two paragraphs, no jargon, no blame. I'll add names before sending.”
“Plan a birthday party for a 7-year-old: 12 kids, at home, 2 hours, $150 budget, one guest has a nut allergy. Give me a timeline, a food list, three activity options, and invitation wording.”
“Packing list for one week of sleepaway camp for a 10-year-old. The camp letter says: [paste]. Group by bag, flag anything that needs a label, and list what to buy versus what we likely own.”
“Here is everything happening in our family next week: [paste the mess]. Find the conflicts, list what has to be prepped the night before, and give me a day-by-day rundown I can read in one minute.”
“We're setting screen-time rules for an 11-year-old. Ask me five questions about our family, then lay out the main approaches with the tradeoffs of each. Don't tell me which to pick.”
“Three kid-friendly dinners from what I have: [fridge contents]. One picky eater who won't touch sauce. Under 30 minutes each, and tell me which to cook first based on what expires.”
None of this makes parenting easy. It makes parenting less like being an unpaid project manager with no assistant, which is a different thing. The worksheet still gets done by the kid, the judgment calls still get made by you, and the pediatrician still outranks the chatbot. What changes is the eleven open tabs at 9:41pm: something else can hold them now, and it never forgets the gluten-free cake.
